Cleveland Cavaliers basketball star LeBron James endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in an op-ed in the Akron Beacon Journal Monday, saying she’s running on a message of hope and unity.

James focused much of the piece on his fondness for his city, his love for the children of his hometown of Akron, Ohio, and on his charity, the LeBron James Family Foundation. James wrote about how lucky he felt to achieve success and how he wants to provide tools for others to do the same, something he argues Clinton can achieve.

“If basketball has taught me anything, it’s that no one achieves greatness alone. And it takes everyone working together to create real change,” James wrote. “When I look at this year’s presidential race, it’s clear which candidate believes the same thing. Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty. And when I think about the kinds of policies and ideas the kids in my foundation need from our government, the choice is clear. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”

The basketball star focused on Clinton’s work with families and his hope that Clinton would continue the work Barak Obama has done during his time as President.

“We must all stand together — no matter where we are from or the color of our skin. And Hillary is running on the message of hope and unity that we need,” he wrote. “There’s still a lot of work to be done in Akron, Northeast Ohio, and all across our great country. We need a president who understands our community and will build on the legacy of President Obama.”

James did not mention Donald Trump once in the op-ed.

James joins several sports stars in supporting Clinton, including his rival, the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry, who James faced off against in the NBA championships the last two years.

  1. Adda boy, LeBron. Maybe this gives her a little push in Ohio? The man is Ohio.

  2. There are a lot of people who listen closely to what their idols in sports and music and other areas say and do, so it matters when major athletes and other speak out for Clinton.

But I gotta ask: Why are so many others silent? They could help save our country by encouraging fans (particularly young people) to register and vote.

That’s a relief! I was sweating that one!

  4. I’m hoping this is one of those things the Clinton camp plans to roll out closer to Election Day. But I was thinking what’s the one celebrity endorsement that she could get the most mileage out of, and I was thinking she needs Beyonce to command the Beyhive to vote for Clinton. It would be great to see her and Jay Z do a few free shows in battleground states. I’d love for her to say something like, “Clinton, like me, is another strong woman who’ll fight for us just like she fought for her family…” Everybody who’s ever listened to Lemonade will know exactly what she’s talking about.

  5. LBJ supports Democratic presidential candidate.

This is news??? Hell, I heard about this in 1968!
