Non-pathogenic bacteria will be used to neutralize the odor from bird guano. Biologists say the odor is a sign that environmental protections put in place over the past few decades have brought back endangered species, like cormorants and brown pelicans. A lawsuit filed in California demands that the city of San Diego address the “foul, noxious and sickening odors” caused by birds and sea lions defecating on the rocks near La Jolla Cove, according to The Los Angeles Times

The Times reported on Saturday that the lawsuit was filed by a group called Citizens for Odor Nuisance Abatement.

According to the lawsuit, the stink is costing area businesses. For example: the boxer Floyd Mayweather and his entourage once allegedly booked a number of rooms at La Valencia Hotel but left after 15 minutes because of the smell.

At issue is a fence erected by City Hall, which keeps people away from the rocks. If humans were allowed near the rocks, the animals would do their business elsewhere, the lawsuit argues.
