‘Nightly Show’ Awards Pope Francis Extremely Low Bar Award (VIDEO)

“The Nightly Show” awarded on Thursday night Pope Francis their Extremely Low Bar Award for simply acknowledging the Catholic Church’s legacy of child abuse amongst its clergy during a speech in Washington, D.C.

“He has been Pope-ing it up, doing a lot world criticizing,” host Larry Wilmore said. “But yesterday in D.C. he wasn’t afraid of turning the focus back to the Church’s ugly past.”

Though he didn’t address specifically address victims, Francis said on Wednesday during a speech at the Cathedral of St. Matthews the child abuse scandals “will never be repeated.”

“Good on the Pope for at least acknowledging the Church’s painful legacy of child abuse in a way his predecessor didn’t,” Wilmore said. “So, I have to say, he’s the latest recipient of our Extremely Low Bar Award.”
