Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), who faces re-election in 2014, said Friday that he will oppose a Senate compromise to expand background checks on purchases of firearms that was brokered by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) earlier this week.
“I’ll examine each amendment to determine whether it strengthens or infringes upon our Second Amendment rights,” Alexander said in a statement. “The Toomey-Manchin proposal to expand background checks in my opinion doesn’t meet that test and I will vote against it.”
