Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-ID) on Wednesday denounced Rep. Steve King’s (R-IA) widely panned remarks against DREAMers, calling them “irresponsible,” “reprehensible” and “terrible.”

“I think his comments were irresponsible and reprehensible,” he told reporters on a Capitol Hill panel with other House conservatives. “I think what he said was out of touch with the conference. There’s nobody in the conference who would say such a thing and I hope that he, if he thought about it, he wouldn’t say such a thing again.”

But Labrador said that “what saddens me the most” is the fact that journalists highlight comments like King’s.

“All you guys can do is fan the flames of one person making a reprehensible and irresponsible comment,” he said. “So I think, shame on you. Shame on the media for only concentrating on that aspect of it. … I get tired of journalism where all you try to tell us is what one person does or says.”

Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) agreed with Labrador, saying that “tone is very important.”
