When she called into C-SPAN while her sons were guests on Tuesday, Joyce Woodhouse didn’t think anybody would notice. But people did and the clip of her comments lightly berating her sons for their bickering (one is a Democratic operative the other is a Republican operative) went viral.

The elder Woodhouse, in an interview with The Washington Post, said she didn’t know anyone really watched C-SPAN: “It’s C-SPAN!”

After she called in and surprised her (slightly but visibly) embarrassed sons Woodhouse continued with her routine, getting her car serviced and going to a mall nearby. But she started to notice people calling and emailing her about the C-SPAN clip. Woodhouse told the Post that she thinks her light scolding of her sons that they should stop bickering was relatable.

“I think there are people who just want to have the bickering stop,” Woodhouse said. “Maybe these people aren’t political and they just don’t like to hear this sort of thing.”

  1. To be honest, it wasn’t actually the airing on C-Span, which was probably seen by several thousand people. It was the viral spreading of the clip later on sites like Gawker, TPM, and Facebook. .

  2. I love this woman - and her comments about the issues she cares about were spot-on.

this is such a wonderful and very funny moment of real life… there is so much revealed of the relationships among these three people – christmas is going to be a hoot.

  4. One of the joys of being an old lady is being able to speak your mind. If your kids don’t want to be embarrassed, they should remember how to behave.

  5. I love it! What gets me the most is the tone that repubs use (all knowing) and treating those on the other side as enemies. I don’t consider folks who disagree with me to be the enemy. It never use to be this way either.
