Jose Antonio Vargas, the most well known undocumented immigrant in America, challenged Congress in his Senate testimony to provide a path to citizenship for people like him.
“Before I take your questions, I have a few of my own,” he said. “What do you want to do with me? What do you want to do with us? How do you define ‘American’?”
Vargas recounted his own personal story — he was brought illegally to America as a child by his grandfather, who was an American citizen, only to find out as a teenager that he himself was the lone undocumented member in a large family of legal immigrants.
“I am the only one in my extended family of 25 Americans who is undocumented,” he said. “When you inaccurately call me ‘illegal,’ you’re not only dehumanizing me, you’re offending them. No human being is illegal.”
