“Last Week Tonight” wanted the full attention of Canada during Sunday’s show. To that end, host John Oliver was joined by a beaver playing “Sweet Caroline” on the keyboard, a moose getting a colonoscopy thanks to Canada’s healthcare system and Canadian actor Mike Myers dressed as a mountie and riding a snowplow.
Oliver wanted the attention because he was about to say, “Do not vote for Stephen Harper,” who has been Canada’s Prime Minister since 2006.
And by saying this, Oliver could be fined $5,000 or spend six months in a Canadian prison because it is against Canadian law for an outsider to tell Canadians to not vote for a particular candidate.
Myers united with Oliver.
“I love Canada, but the fact that it has a law banning outsiders from telling Canadians how to vote is one of the least Canadian things possible,” Myers said. “Oh, and don’t vote for Stephen Harper.”
And Oliver had even more reasons not to vote Harper.
“Stephen Harper doesn’t care about black people,” Oliver said, echoing rapper Kanye West’s comments against President George W. Bush after Hurricane Katrina.
“Oh, god,” Myers said while shuddering. “Not again!”
“What I meant to say was Stephen Harper doesn’t care about Muslim people,” Oliver said.

Exactly what I needed this Monday morning
Too bad we don’t have a law prohibiting our Congresspeople from writing a letter to an outsider to influence (the outsider) to act against our President in foreign policy. I would love to see all 40+ of those assholes in jail, or at least fined.
I hope Canada votes to oust Stephen Harper today.
We NEED this one Canada. Harper isn’t just a bad Prime Minister, nor is he just a divisive figure - he represents the Republicanization of the Canadian right wing. We used to have “Progressive Conservatives”… those days are dead.
This is our version of your 2008 election guys - can you imagine the direction the country would have taken under President McCain and VP Palin? That’s what we’re faced with - a xenophobic Christian fundamentalist who’s racked up billions in debt and intentionally weakened our democratic institutions, a man who’s party has been under criminal investigation for illegal activities during the past 4 elections (including this one)… or a Liberal party promising sane economics, necessary increases in immigration, and hell, they’re even legalizing pot.
We need to win this one. Vote NDP, vote Liberal - just vote ABC!
How can he lose with RobFord’s endorsement? s/
