Kasich Doesn’t Correct Voter Who Thinks He’s Running As A Democrat (VIDEO)

Ohio Gov. John Kasich made the case to a still-undecided New Hampshire voter that she should vote for him instead of the two other candidates she’s considering supporting – the Democrats.

The self-identified undecided voter said at a Monday town hall she was still choosing between supporting Kasich, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

“Isn’t that interesting,” Kasich cut in, with a laugh. “How do I get you over?”

“So my question is: Why should I vote for you in the Democratic primary tomorrow?” the woman asked.

Kasich didn’t correct the voter, but joked, “I am for Bernie being president of Ben & Jerry’s. As a result of that, I want them to give us free ice cream. I mean, if we can get free everything, why not free ice?”

He went on to say because Sanders identifies as a Democratic socialist, “it’s just not gonna happen.”

About Clinton, Kasich said “we can’t run America with pollsters” and called her “brittle.”

“I’m the right porridge, one of them’s too hot, the other one’s too cold, but I got the right temperature,” he told the crowd.

After finishing, Kasich asked the voter if he’d won her over, and she responded, “I’ll let you know tomorrow night.”

The governor asked her to call and let him know which way she voted, before reconsidering: “If you don’t vote for me…I might cry.”

  3. It’s truly sad how even the “sensible” Republican candidate can’t give actual reasons for anyone to vote for him, besides not being one of the other candidates. Because that’s all Republicans can really run on, since the party has gone so nuts that it’s a huge liability to talk about anything besides how Democrats are terrible and need to be opposed no matter what. Even their anti-government anti-tax anti-abortion stance is really just about these being liberal things which they oppose on the principal that liberal things can’t be good.

Not that I’m so naive as to think that this is anything new, but candidates at least used to pretend to run on issues; which they’d use to bludgeon their opponent. These days, it’s dangerous for them to get any more specific than abstract concepts like liberty and security as they apply to older white voters. Not because these politicians are cowardly, but because that’s all their base really cares about, since they don’t really care about policies either. They just hate Democrats.

  5. Yes.*

Meaning that it is not a closed primary, in which votes can be cast in a party primary only by people registered with that party, in that state. Undeclared voters—those not registered with any party—can vote in either party primary. However, it does not meet a common definition of an “open primary”, because people registered as Republican or Democrat on voting day cannot cast ballots in the primary of the other party
