Jill Abramson’s “ambitious, killer” journalism project might have a home at the Huffington Post, according to the New York Times.
Abramson and the journalist Steven Brill are said to be in discussions with HuffPost’s founder and editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington and AOL Chairman Tim Armstrong.
Brill told the Times he and Abramson, the first female executive editor of the Times who was fired by the newspaper earlier this year, were in talks with a number of companies, but he did not comment on the discussions with HuffPost.
The Times reported that the new startup will “run long articles monthly and pay writers advances of up to $100,000.”
During an event in Boston last month, Abramson said she and Brill were “not trying to start a whole magazine or a full website.” Instead, they would be focused on “trying to do a discrete number of great pieces.”
“We’re talking to some investors who are sounding very interested and we are going to do great stories and offer great journalists actually money that they can live on to write something wonderful for us,” she said.
