Tel Aviv District Court Judge Nissim Yeshaya resigned Wednesday after observing that “there are some girls who enjoy being raped” while presiding over a hearing on the rape of a 13-year-old girl, the Associated Press reports.
Yeshaya made the comment in the middle of a heated debate over whether the girl’s rape, which was committed by four Palestinian youths who were convicted six years ago, constituted an act of political aggression.
A lawyer present at the hearing said that Yeshaya “didn’t really understand what he said and didn’t understand why everyone was quiet,” according to the Times of Israel.
Many Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sharply criticized the remark.
