Hialeah, FL Gunman Passed 2010 Background Check, Amassed Ammo

Pedro Alberto Vargas

The gunman who killed six people before being fatally gunned down Saturday in a standoff at a South Florida apartment complex used a Glock 17 9mm handgun that he obtained in 2010 after passing a background check, the Miami Herald reported.

Police in Hialeah, Fla. told the Herald that Pedro Alberto Vargas had a concealed weapons permit for the gun, which he purchased for $593.49 at the Florida Gun Center in Hialeah three years ago. The purchase also included the background check and a box of 50 rounds. Police said it was unclear where Vargas got the hundreds of rounds they found after the shooting spree.

According to the Herald, Vargas was described by friends as a “solitary man” who “would take up arms to fight for Cuba’s freedom.” Vargas emigrated from Cuba in 1997.
