The leader of a far-right Austrian political party said in a Facebook post Tuesday that he plans to be in Washington, D.C. to attend meetings “on the sidelines” of the presidential inauguration.
“There is a series of invitations to talks with interesting political representatives of the United States on the sidelines of the U.S. president’s inauguration on our packed schedule,” Austrian Freedom Party chairman Heinz-Christian Strache wrote, as translated by Reuters.
Strache did not specify who he would be meeting with, nor whether he would attend Trump’s inauguration ceremonies or any galas in Washington.
The Austrian Freedom Party, which is virulently anti-immigrant and was founded by ex-Nazis, narrowly lost a bid for the Austrian presidency in December of last year.
Strache claimed late last year to have met with Trump’s incoming National Security Adviser Ret. Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn at Trump Tower, although a spokesman for the President-elect’s transition team later denied that the two had met. Still, other members of the Austrian Freedom Party appear to have taken celebratory photos from within Trump Tower on Election Day, which they later posted on their personal Facebook pages.
