Google’s vice president of maps and local services Marissa Mayer has been nominated to Walmart’s board of directors, the company announced on Monday.
Walmart was quite candid in declaring it wanted Mayer onboard for her technical expertise as the world’s largest retailer increasingly delves into digital products and services.
“At Walmart, we are focused on giving our millions of customers around the globe ‘anytime anywhere’ access whether it is through a mobile device, online or in a physical store,” said Walmart Chairman Rob Walton. “We are on the cusp of a massive transformation in the way people shop in our increasingly connected world. Marissa’s insights and expertise in the technology and consumer areas are valuable assets to Walmart as we move forward.”
For her part, Mayer seemed equally enthusiastic at the possibility of joining the board.
“Very excited about my nomination for Walmart’s Board!” Mayer wrote on her Google Plus profile page.
Mayer, 36, is known for her attention to design and her stated love of shopping.
Mayer still has to be confirmed as Walmart’s 16th board member, pending a vote by Walmart shareholders at the annual shareholders meeting on June 1.
