Former House Speaker and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Monday suggested that the American firearms industry’s top salesman lives in the White House.
“No one has done more for gun ownership than Barack Obama,” Gingrich told Newsmax. “If you look at the number of people who have bought guns since he became president, he has been the most successful salesman for people having the right to bear arms in modern history.”
Firearms sales in the United States have soared since the December massacre in Newtown, Conn. as pro-gun advocates like the National Rifle Association have stoked fears of new laws. Additionally, the NRA has touted a surge in membership since the mass shooting in Newtown, the impetus for the White House’s efforts to usher in new gun policy.
