Former Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) had just finished the Boston Marathon, what she described as “one of my best races ever.” Waiting for her sister to cross the finish line, Schmidt borrowed someone’s cell phone to notify her husband about her performance. Minutes later, she heard an explosion and turned around to see several people “without limbs.”

“I’ve never been so close to death or witnessed it,” Schmidt told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Schmidt was elected to Congress in 2005 and left the House of Representatives in January, after she was defeated in a Republican primary last year.
