FDA Approves First Take-Home HIV Test

The FDA has approved the sale the OraQuick test, the first over-the-counter HIV test offered to consumers in the nation. The test, produced by Orasure, will detect the presence of the HIV virus via a mouth swab within 20 minutes.

Government officials believe that approximately 20 percent of the 1.2 million HIV carriers in the US are unaware that they are infected. New infections have held steady at about 50,000 per year over the last two decades.
