Jerry Falwell Jr. penned a Washington Post op-ed posted Friday evening that compared Donald Trump to Winston Churchill and warned that Americans will “suffer dire consequences” if they don’t line up behind the GOP nominee.

“We are at a crossroads where our first priority must be saving our nation. We need a leader with qualities that resemble those of Winston Churchill, and I believe that leader is Donald Trump,” Falwell wrote.

Falwell endorsed Trump back in January and spoke at the GOP national convention last month.

In his Washington Post op-ed, Falwell said Democrats won the White House in 2008 and 2012 because the GOP nominees were “weak establishment Republicans.” He also blamed “a feckless establishment Republican Congress” for enabling foreign policy decisions by the Obama administration that Falwell said breathed “breathing life into the lungs” of the Islamic State.

He went on to allege that the media had created a public perception of Trump that was “simply false,” while bashing the Republicans who have said they cannot support the GOP nominee.

“Republicans such as Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) need to stop whining about Trump’s temperament and start focusing on Clinton’s corruption,” Falwell wrote.

“Despite our differences, Americans from all walks of life must unite behind Trump and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence or suffer dire consequences,” he wrote.
