The European Union contacted U.S. authorities in Washington and Brussels demanding information about reports in Der Spiegel magazine that the U.S. tapped EU offices in Washington, Brussels and the United Nations, according to Reuters.
“They have told us they are checking on the accuracy of the information released yesterday and will come back to us,” according to a European Commission statement obtained by Reuters.
Der Spiegel, a weekly German news magazine, reported Saturday that the National Security Agency tapped EU offices and EU internal computer networks. In a follow-up report Sunday, the magazine wrote that the U.S. secretly taps, on average, a half billion phone calls, emails and text messages in Germany per month.
