Real estate mogul Donald Trump appeared chummy with moderator Hugh Hewitt Wednesday night on the Republican debate stage, despite having bashed the conservative radio host in recent days for asking “gotcha” questions on foreign policy.
Trump turned his ire toward Hewitt earlier this month after he was widely mocked for confusing the Kurds, an ethnic group, for the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in an interview. But Hewitt said Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that he was the one at fault for framing the question wrong.
Trump said on the debate stage that he’d heard Hewitt, who was one of the three moderators, had apologized for the “misunderstanding” and praised the billionaire as “the best interview he’s ever done.”
“You’re the best interview in America,” Hewitt chimed in.
“We had a legitimate misunderstanding in terms of his pronunciation of a word,” Trump continued to guffaws from the audience. “Well, I think it was. He actually said that. Did you say that?”
Hewitt nodded his head as Trump went on to defend his responses in the original interview.
“He was giving me name after name, Arab name, Arab name,” the real estate mogul said. “There are few people anywhere, anywhere that would have known those names.”
