This undated handout photo provided by Don Beyer shows Beyer. Rep. Jim Moran’s announcement that he would not seek election set off the multi-candidate race in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District seat, which borders the nation’s capital and includes Alexandria, Falls Church, Arlington County and parts of Fairfax County. Moran, a liberal Democrat who has held the seat for the last 24 years, has not endorsed a successor. The establishment choice, former Virginia Lt. Gov. Beyer, has raised more than $1 million so far, the only one of the seven candidates to do so. He’s received the backing of several Obama administration officials, including David Axelrod, Peter Rouse and Jim Messina, as well as former presidential candidate Howard Dean. (AP Photo) MORE LESS

Former Lt. Gov Don Beyer won a multi-candidate primary for outgoing Rep. Jim Moran’s (D-VA) congressional district on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Beyer beat out six other candidates for the nomination.

Besides serving as lieutenant governor, Beyer also was President Barack Obama’s ambassador to both Liechtenstein and Switzerland. He was endorsed by a number of Obama administration officials.

If Beyer wins in the general election he will succeed Moran, who has has held the seat for 24 years. Moran’s name had previously appeared in police reports in 1999, when his then-wife phoned the police to report an incident of domestic violence. When his son pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend in 2012, Moran said he hoped his son would be able to put the “embarrassing situation” behind him.
