A dog owned by the stepdaughter of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) killed a sea lion on a beach in Laguna Beach, Calif. on Saturday, NBC Los Angeles reported.
The incident was captured on video by a bystander, who later uploaded the footage to YouTube. The video apparently shows Giffords’ stepdaughter, and then Giffords’ husband, Mark Kelly, trying to get the dog to release the sea lion from its jaws. Kelly eventually succeeded in wrenching the dog away, but the sea lion later died, according to officials.
Kelly, Giffords, and Kelly’s two teenage daughters were staying in Laguna Beach.
“We are not looking at any charges or citations on the 18-year-old girl walking the dog because it’s legal this time of year to have the dog down there if it’s leashed, which it was,” Laguna Beach police Capt. Jason Kravetz told City News Service. “It’s just a very, very unfortunate event.”
