Fox News host Megyn Kelly had Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) on her show Wednesday for a spirited exchange over the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups.
McDermott became persona non grata among conservatives Tuesday when, during a House committee hearing with representatives from groups said to have been targeted by the agency, he argued that the scandal amounted to “political theater.” But as McDermott reminded Kelly early on in the interview, he also acknowledged during the hearing that IRS officials had been “stupid” and “inept.”
When Kelly highlighted testimony from a man who claimed that his group had lost a $30,000 donation as a result of the IRS scrutiny, McDermott rebutted by reminding the host that he wasn’t testifying under oath.
“Do you reject it?” Kelly scoffed. “He was lying? Is this your answer to that?”
“Ms. Kelly, you are putting words in my mouth. Stop that!” McDermott fired back. “You are putting words in my mouth. Stop it!”
