David Waddell, a former town councilman in Indian Trail, N.C. who enjoyed some viral glory when he submitted his resignation letter in Klingon, is now running as a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate.

The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that Waddell was one of three candidates who gathered enough signatures to qualify for write-in status in the race pitting incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) against state House Speaker Tom Tillis (R).

Waddell told the Observer that he is a registered Libertarian and plans to run in part on property rights and adherence to the Constitution. He likely won’t be making “Star Trek” references a hallmark of his campaign, however.

“Having campaign signs in Klingon is probably a bad idea,” he told the newspaper. “But maybe I’ll make up one or two and put one in the mayor’s yard.”
