David Schweikert Defeats Ben Quayle In Arizona GOP House Primary

Rep. David Schweikert has defeated fellow freshman Rep. Ben Quayle — son of former Vice President Dan Quayle — in a Republican primary in Arizona brought about by redistricting.

With 67 percent of precincts reporting, Schweikert leads Quayle by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent, according to the Associated Press. The Arizona Republic reports that Quayle has called Schweikert, and conceded the race.

The reconfigured district was made up from more of Quayle’s old territory than Schweikert’s, though Quayle himself had to move into the district in order to live within the new lines — subjecting him to accusations of carpetbagging by Schweikert.

Quayle gained some fame in 2010 for an ad declaring, “Barack Obama is the worst president in history,” “I was raised right,” and also: “Somebody has to go to Washington and knock the hell out of the place.” He followed that up with a new ad in this race: “Two years ago, I called him ‘the worst president in history’ — I overestimated him.”
