Former Central Intelligence Agency director and retired Army Gen. David Petraeus sent his own congratulations Thursday to Stephen Colbert for being named the next host of “Late Show.”

“It is great to see a figure who has been such a tremendous supporter of our men and women in uniform — and who visited them in combat — selected to host the ‘Late Show!’” Petraeus told Military Times.

Earlier in the day, CBS announced that Colbert would leave his Comedy Central show to replace David Letterman.

In 2009, Colbert taped four episodes of “The Colbert Report” for audiences of American troops in Iraq.
