In a Tuesday interview, Ben Carson agreed it would be a “good idea” for Donald Trump to correct the record about whether he really believes the conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was born outside the United States.

“Do you think it’s time for Donald Trump to acknowledge that all that birther nonsense was a mistake and to apologize, so that African-American voters to whom he is reaching out might be more willing to listen to his message?” CNN host Jake Tapper asked.

“I think that would be a good idea, absolutely,” Carson replied. “I suggest that on all sides let’s get all of the hate and rancor out of the way so that we can actually discuss the issues.”

Since the Republican primary debates, Trump has studiously avoided questions about his vocal involvement in the “birther” movement that questioned President Barack Obama’s birth certificate, saying only that he doesn’t “talk about that anymore.”
