Former GOP presidential contender Ben Carson joked Wednesday that his mother might have opted to shoot “dishonest reporters” for their coverage of the 2016 race.

Asked on CBS Radio’s “Brown and Scoop” podcast how his mother would’ve felt if she were “alive” to witness this year’s election, Carson clarified that his mother, Sonya, is still alive but suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

“She’s not really cognizant of that, which is a good thing because my mother is really a fighter,” said the retired neurosurgeon, who is now advising Donald Trump. “She probably would have taken a gun and gone out and shot some of the dishonest reporters.”

Carson said the Founding Fathers would be similarly displeased with the “dishonest media” for manipulating the public with what he said was biased campaign reporting.

Back when he was in the running, the ever-colorful Carson brought up unverified accounts of his own youthful predilection toward violence, insisting that he attempted to stab a relative when he was 14 years old. At the time, Trump compared Carson to a “child molester” for his “pathological” violent bent.
