CNN media reporter Brian Stelter paid tribute on Friday to his mentor and longtime friend, New York Times columnist David Carr, who died on Thursday night.
“I don’t know what we’re gonna do without him,” Stelter said on CNN’s “New Day” Friday morning.
Carr’s friendship with him was part of the 2011 documentary, “Page One: Inside The New York Times,” which looked at their work covering the changing media landscape for the newspaper before Stelter moved to CNN.
Stelter remained silent on social media Thursday night as news of Carr’s death began to reverberate on Twitter, but he started tweeting on Friday morning, sharing photos and memories of his mentor.
My heart is broken.

This is how I’ll remember @Carr2n. He looks like he’s strangling me. He’s actually about to kiss me on the cheek. pic.twitter.com/aITn7Inlro

I loved David so much. He’s been the closest thing I had to a dad. About girls, bosses, life — he always knew what to say, what to do.

We all looked to @carr2n to make sense of the media revolution & to contemplate the future. A future without him is terrible to contemplate.

Wednesday night, an email: “Am in yer shop.” @Carr2n was in the CNN green room, about to talk with @AndersonCooper. I hurried upstairs…

We gossiped about NBC. Then he asked about Jamie. Even gave me vacation tips. His goodbye was a bear hug. God I wish we’d had more time.
