House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) offered no hints on Thursday as to when the House would move to consider domestic violence legislation known as the Violence Against Women Act.
“I expect the House will act in a timely fashion in some way,” Boehner said at a weekly press briefing in Washington.
The Senate overwhelmingly voted on Tuesday to pass legislation reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act with expanded protections for gays, undocumented immigrants and Native American women who suffer from domestic abuse. A top aide to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said on Wednesday that House GOP leaders intend to consider their own, yet-to-be unveiled version of the legislation in the coming weeks.
