House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Thursday he was “insulted” by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s op-ed in the New York Times where he continued to express opposition to military intervention in Syria while taking issue with the idea of “American exceptionalism.”
Asked to elaborate by a reporter at a weekly press conference, Boehner declined.
“No, I think the president does foreign policy… I’ve already said more than I should have said. But you got the truth,” he added.
The op-ed brought disparagement from both sides of the political aisle. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said the column insulted Americans’ intelligence, while Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) said it nearly made him “vomit.”
