Bloomberg Urges Donors To Cut Off Democrats Who Opposed Gun Bill

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on top donors Wednesday to freeze out the four Democratic senators who voted against the gun legislation that ultimately failed, the New York Times reported.

In a letter sent to hundreds of Democratic donors in New York, Bloomberg urged them to punish Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Mark Pryor (D-AR), Mark Begich (D-AK) and Max Baucus (D-MT) for helping the Republican-led filibuster that helped derail legislation aimed at strengthening background checks on gun buyers. Baucus will retire at the end of next year, while Pryor and Begich are both facing potentially competitive re-election challenges in 2014.

According to the Times, donors from New York gave $30.4 million to Democratic senators and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2012 — more than any other state.
