Republican distillery owner Denver Riggleman, known for his extreme fascination with Bigfoot, has defeated journalist and Democratic candidate Leslie Cockburn in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. Incumbent Rep. Tom Garrett (R-VA) announced in May that he would not seek reelection. NBC News and CBS News have called the race for Cockburn.

you mean “has called the race for Riggleman” in the last line.
One hopes his distillery goes tits up in the next 2 years.
Seriously, the 5th is still so cocked up under gerrymandering that it’s damn near impossible for a Dem to win.
Maybe Bigfoot helped him be against zero tolerance immigration and for laws to fix climate change. Guess Bigfoot doesn’t have pre existing health conditions…
This is not good. I was looking forward to Cockburn making it to the House Intelligence committee. The Dems need smart, articulate, educated, worldly people like Cockburn if they hope to turn things around. We needed Cockburn to win. She was leading on and off toward the end of the race. Her losing is a bad sign for this evening, IMO. Plus, Riggleman is terrible. The only reason to elect him is to say “Suck on this, Dems.”. He’s been a terrible rep, IMO, regardless of his terrible ideology. That he can be elected, does not bode well.
I don’t think Dems take the House.
We are about to witness the death of this Republic.
