Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday condemned Mitt Romney’s Jeep television and radio ad running in Ohio as “one of the most flagrantly dishonest ads I can remember in my political career.”
The ads drew unusually widespread condemnation in the press for tying a planned expansion of Jeep operations in China to the fate of Jeep workers in Ohio. Chrysler, Jeep’s parent company, has publicly said Romney’s were false.
“No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country,” a GM spokesman said on Tuesday.
Biden offered a blistering critique of Romney’s intentions at a campaign event in Sarasota, Florida, labeling the Republican ticket “contortionists.”
“A lie so deceptive and so patently untrue that Chrysler spoke up,” Biden said of the ad. “What a cynical, cynical thing to do.”
“I’m being a good Biden today,” said the vice president, after holding his tongue in place of stronger language.
President Obama currently holds a 3.5 percentage lead over Mitt Romney in Ohio, according to TPM’s PollTracker polling average.
