California Sen. Barbara Boxer floated the idea Thursday that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) appeals to young voters because they see him as a grandfather figure.
“Bernie’s entry in the race I think was very helpful, because he was able to communicate to the young people who were longing to hear their grievances addressed,” Boxer told SiriusXM radio’s Julie Mason, as quoted by The Hill.
“There was a psychologist I heard who said that the young people look at Bernie as their grandpa,” she continued. “You know, ‘Oh it’s my grandpa and he’s gonna do great things for me.’ And so he connected with a whole group of voters who don’t ordinarily vote.”
Boxer also said she’s optimistic Sanders would do “everything in his power to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.”
The senator, who has endorsed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, ran aground with Sanders supporters earlier this month when she was booed on stage at the rowdy Nevada Democratic Convention.
