A man from a suburb outside of Phoenix was arrested Monday for allegedly leaving his five-year-old granddaughter in the Arizona desert with a loaded handgun while he went for a “few drinks and a cheeseburger,” according to a news release.
The child’s family reported her missing to the Sheriff’s Office four hours after Paul Rater, 62, reportedly left his home with her Sunday night in his pickup truck, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The granddaughter was located alone in the desert with the handgun — cocked and ready to fire. Rater was found at a store where he told police that he had left the girl while he “went for a few drinks and a cheeseburger,” according to the police.
Rater was arrested on two counts of child abuse and one count of child endangerment, according to the release.
