At an Arab League meeting held in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, League members offered their support to the Syrian peace plan proposed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Annan’s plan calls for moving heavy weaponry and troops out of urban areas, immediate humanitarian assistance and the release of imprisoned opposition activists. The support of Arab League Foreign Ministers for Annan’s plan represents a slight softening towards the Assad regime, as some Arab nations had previously called for Assad to step down as President. But, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reporting from the meeting noted that some states such as the new Libyan government remained more committed to a long term political solution in Syria.
