Annan Admits Syrian Peace Plan Failing

Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General and current UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, admitted on Thursday that the proposed six-point peace plan in Syria is failing. According to Al Jazeera, Annan spoke to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, saying, “I must be frank and confirm that the [six-point peace] plan is not being implemented.” Annan also confirmed that civilian massacres have taken place in Houla and al-Qubayr, though he refrained from accusing the Syrian government of the killings.

Syria’s UN envoy, Bashar Jaafari, responded by saying that the Syrian government was investigating the massacres, but that international media was broadcasting false images of the events and victims. According to a government statement, “What a few media have reported on what happened in al-Qubayr, in the Hama region, is completely false.”
