WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 05: U.S. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) casts his vote in the House Chamber during the third day of elections for Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 05, 2023 in Washington, DC. The House of Representatives is meeting to vote for the next Speaker after House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to earn more than 218 votes on several ballots; the first time in 100 years that the Speaker was not elected on the first ballot. After a third day of voting and 11 rounds of roll call with no real change, the Republican Party still hasn’t managed to elect a speaker, MAGA-infused conservative hardliners are holding the House hostage and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is still trying to convince everyone that he can pull of some sort of deal.

We reported that there might be some light at the end of the GOP division tunnel for McCarthy this morning. But it seems that taking that with a grain of salt was the right advice.

Negotiations are either ongoing or have become stagnant. Who knows! It changes by the hour! After tonight’s vote to adjourn, it’s becoming increasingly likely the speaker race may go well into the next week.

We’ll see you back here tomorrow morning. Catch up on our live coverage throughout the day today below:

  1. THREE MORE VOTES! THREE MORE VOTES!

I want Rs to start peeling off as “present” until the threshold is 213 or 214 and watch them shit their pants as Jeffries starts measuring the drapes in the Speaker’s office. Never happen, I know, but a boy can dream.

Thanks for staying on this for those of us that can’t have CSPAN on all day to watch/listen to the stupidity of this débâcle.

  3. Democrats govern. Republicans engage in guerrilla theatre. Nancy Pelosi confronted a mutiny and held her caucus together so the House could pass meaningful legislation as the Country confronted some huge challenges in 2020. The contrasts could not be greater. These clowns couldn’t get elected dog catcher without gerrymandering.

  4. the demands from the McCarthy detractors are aggressive and will require major concessions.

Which will do what for the American people?

    Hahahahahahahahahaha!!! I make me laugh.
