Today On The Trail: April 30, 2012

Here are 10 things you need to know today.

  • Clinton calls Romney Bush “on steriods”: At a fundraiser Sunday evening, Bill Clinton appeared with President Obama and made the case that, without mentioning him by name, Mitt Romney is pushing George W. Bush’s agenda, only worse. Romney “basically wants to do what they did before, on steroids,” Clinton said, “which will get you the same consequences you got before, on steroids.” Obama echoed a line Robert Gibbs spoke earlier Sunday when he said he and Hillary Clinton have “spent the past three and a half years cleaning up after other folks’ messes.”
  • Obama campaign releases video touting president’s accomplishments: Team Obama released a new video, “Forward,” outlining the challenges President Obama encountered when he took office and the steps he has taken over the last three years. The video quotes Mitch McConnell saying that his party’s No. 1 goal is to deny Obama a second term. The campaign says the video “will serve as an important grassroots organizing tool through the course of the general election,” and will be “played live during the president’s first campaign rallies next Saturday in Ohio and Virginia.”
  • Dems, GOP debate whether bin Laden is fair game: Republicans charge that Democrats and President Obama are being divisive in touting the death of bin Laden for political gain. Democrats argue it’s fair game as a campaign promise that the president has fulfilled.
  • Barbour considers the DREAM Act: Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, now an adviser to Karl Rove’s American Crossroads super PAC, said parts of the DREAM Act make sense. “Some of the concepts are clearly attractive,” Barbour said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “The fact that people come and serve in the military certainly ought to give them some status in the United States, whether it’s that they have the right to stay and to work and long as they pay taxes, as long as they don’t break the law. Maybe there should be a different path to citizenship.”
  • Romney’s economic plan is out of date: Early on in the campaign, Romney proposed a 59-point economic plan called “Believe in America: Mitt Romney’s Plan for Jobs and Economic Growth.” His surrogates continue to reference it on the trail. But over the last several months, the details of Romney’s plans have changed, reports USA Today.
  • EMILY’’s List Endorses Hassan in New Hampshire: On Monday, EMILY’s List is endorsing Maggie Hassan for governor of New Hampshire — the first gubernatorial candidate the group has endorsed this cycle. EMILY’s List has been working with Hassan since 2004. “Now, more than ever, our states need the leadership of strong, pro-choice Democratic women like Maggie Hassan,” the group said in a press release.
  • Obama campaign faces voter ID laws: A wave of voter ID laws passed across the country in the last two years will present a challenge to President Obama in November, particularly in swing states. The Obama campaign is preparing to meet the challenge. Campaign staffers spread out across the country, from Wisconsin to Florida this weekend to help train people on the ground on how to best deal with the laws and make sure people get a chance to vote.
  • Romney campaigns in New Hampshire with Ayotte: Romney will appear at a campaign event Monday morning with New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a freshman Republican who is the subject of VP speculation. On Monday evening, Romney will hold a fundriaser in Boston.
  • Biden on the trail: Joe Biden is in campaign mode now, hitting the trail for President Obama. Biden will attend campaign events in Kansas City, Mo., and Munster, Ind., Monday and again on Thursday in Washington.
  • Barrett campaigns with Kohl in Wisconsin: Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett will campaign with retiring Sen. Herb Kohl Monday. There will be three stops total, in Green Bay, Eau Claire and La Crosse.
