Today On The Trail: April 12, 2012

Here are ten things you need to know today.

  • Obama campaign hits Romney on anniversary of MA health care law: On the sixth anniversary of ‘Romneycare,’ the Obama campaign released a 3-minute video highlighting the similarities between ‘Romneycare’ and ‘Obamacare’ — attacking Mitt Romney for backing away from his own plan by promising to get rid of national health care reform. The video pits Romney as putting politics over the health of Americans by promising to repeal a reform he put in place in his own state.
  • Biden to speak in New Hampshire: The fourth in a series of speeches framing the issues at stake in the general election, Vice President Biden will speak at Exeter Town Hall in Exeter, New Hampshire. The topic of this speech is the Buffett Rule, and Biden will argue that Obama supports making sure millionaires pay their fair share, while Romney would continue to give tax breaks and loopholes to the rich.
  • Obama leads in New Jersey: President Obama leads Mitt Romney by 9 percentage points, 49% to 40% in New Jersey, according to the latest poll from Quinnipiac University. Even with Gov. Chris Christie on the GOP ticket, Obama leads 49% to 42%. As is the recent trend, New Jersey has a gender gap: “Men would vote for a Romney-Christie ticket 50 – 42 percent, while women would vote for President Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden 55 – 35 percent.”
  • Menendez leads challenger by 9: Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey leads his rival, State Sen. Joseph Kyrillos, 44% to 35%, according to Quinnpiac University’s new New Jersey poll. The analysis is that with Kryillos a virtually unknown figure, Mendendez’s 9-point lead isn’t enough to keep him out of danger.
  • Dems keep hitting Romney over fair pay act: The Democrats are not letting up over comments from Mitt Romney’s camp over the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act on Wednesday, when the campaign was unclear whether Romney would have signed the legislation making it easier for women to sue over pay discrimination. DNC Chairowman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called the Romney camp’s “radio silence” on the issue “utterly shocking.”
  • Dem pundit questions Ann Romney’s work history, gets slammed by campaign: On CNN, Democratic commentator Hilary Rosen questioned whether Ann Romney, who’s “never worked a day in her life,” is the right person to be relaying women’s fears about the economy to her husband — as Mitt claims she does. Wednesday night, the Romney campaign used the incident to accuse the Obama camp of not respecting stay-at-home mothers.
  • Huntsman could face lawsuit from former advisors: Jon Huntsman could face legal action from his former campaign advisors for failing to pay off over $1 million in campaign debt or share his plans for paying it off.
  • Elizabeth Warren sends out Scott Brown fundraising email: The Warren campaign used a fundraising email from Sen. Scott Brown’s campaign, which called Warren supporters “Hollywood Crowd” and the “Far Left Juggernaut,” to raise money. By simply forwarding the email, Warren had possibly the most lucrative email campaign to date, bringing in over $50,000.
  • Gingrich camp releases video ‘Last Conservative Standing’: Without Rick Santorum in the race, Newt Gingrich is continuing to use a line that debuted on his website the day Rick Santorum suspended his campaign: “last conservative standing.” In his new video of that name, Gingrich uses footage from supporters saying why they like Gingrich.
  • Gingrich and Paul campaign: Newt Gingrich has one event scheduled at a diner in Delaware. Ron Paul has a town hall scheduled in Texas.
