Add Marco Rubio to Mitt Romney’s column. The first-term Florida senator – arguably the biggest endorsement left of uncommitted Republican heavyweights – officially endorsed Romney Wednesday night on “Hannity.”
Rubio’s is only the latest big endorsement get for Romney — he won the backing of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and House GOP leaders Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy.
Rubio insisted, as he has throughout the cycle, that he does not want to join the Republican ticket as a nominee for vice president, though he is widely considered to be on the shortlist, if not the faraway frontrunner.
“I don’t believe I’m going to be asked,” Rubio said. “That’s not what I want.”
Rubio congratulated the GOP field, but emphasized that the race needs to wrap soon in order for the party to unify.
“We’re at a stage now where at least two of the candidates have openly admitted that the only way they’re gonna win the nomination is having a floor fight in Tampa,” Rubio said.
Rubio also said that while has “no personal animosity” toward President Obama, he believes him to be a “failure” as president, and was confident that Romney would be “head and shoulders better” as a leader.
Romney sent out a grateful tweet soon after: “Ann joins me in thanking @MarcoRubio for the confidence he is placing in my leadership and for the great honor he has done me today.”
