DES MOINES — The press may be hell-bent on uncovering every detail of the massive payments sent Newt Gingrich’s way by Freddie Mac in the lead up to the economic crisis, but Gingrich says voters are totally uninterested.
“It’s fascinating because I did a town hall meeting in Jacksonville and took questions for over an hour,” Gingrich told reporters in the spin room after Saturday’s Mitt Romney-free debate in Des Moines. “And none of these questions [about the dealings with Freddie Mac] never came up.”
Gingrich again said that the contract with the government-backed mortgage company went to his consulting firm, the Gingrich Group, and not him personally.
“We had a number of clients,” Gingrich said. “The money wasn’t paid directly to me.”
Gingrich suggested all the pertinent questions about the contract have been answered.
“The fact is, I do no lobbying, I have never done any lobbying,” Gingrich said. “I am a strategic adviser. Anyone who watched any of these debates knows I’m capable of being a strategic adviser.”
