Massachusetts Dems: Yes, Brown Has Claimed To Meet ‘Kings And Queens’ Before

Massachusetts Democrats are pouncing on Republican Sen. Scott Brown’s statement that he has had secret meetings with various foreign leaders, including “kings and queens.”

Brown said in a radio interview: “Each and every day that I’ve been a United States senator, I’ve been either discussing issues, meeting on issues, in secret meetings — with kings and queens and prime ministers and business leaders and military leaders — talking, voting, working on issues every single day.”

The Brown campaign quickly backtracked once the remarks caught fire. Spokesman Colin Reed told reporters: “Sen. Brown was referring generally to private meetings with foreign and domestic leaders. He misspoke when he said kings and queens.”

This has the state Dems responding, though — with a new Web video, compiled from their tracker footage, challenging the idea that Brown simply misspoke in one instance.

Along with ridiculing Brown by playing the ABBA song “Dancing Queen,” the video shows him repeating the “kings and queens” line at several events: The Berkshires Chamber of Commerce, on August 10, 2011; the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, on August 15, 2011; the Sandwich Veterans Meeting, also on August 15, 2011; the Wakefield Chamber of Commerce, on November 18, 2011.

The Brown campaign did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment.
