If you were watching cable news on Monday, you would have gotten a sense of the blanket excitement that preceded Sarah Palin’s guest host appearance on NBC’s Today Show.
The moment was billed as a head-to-head against Good Morning America guest host Katie Couric, whose famous interview with the former Alaska governor in 2008 marked the beginning of the end of Palin’s wider general election appeal.
Early risers on Tuesday were greeted to the sight of Palin jokingly flipping through newspapers on the Today show couch, a play on her famous answer to Couric where she was unable to answer which papers she read.
As host Matt Lauer asked Palin about the current state of the GOP race, she offered another lukewarm endorsement of the current front-runner. “It seems [Romney] is the frontrunner, are you happy with that?” he asked, prompting a sharp intake of breath from Palin. “Anybody but Obama”, was who Palin was looking to support, adding that that would be “infinitely better” than Obama’s “failed socialist policies.”
Whoever the nominee is, Palin added, “they’re gonna get clobbered by the lamestream media.”
With the tough stuff out of the way, it was time for Palin to dive in to traditional Today fodder, offering her insight into Jessica Simpson’s weight gain, “pigs-in-blankets” and Tori Spelling’s role as an inspiring figure.
