Rep. Connie Mack IV (R-FL) announced Monday night that he is running for US. Senate against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson — the same Senate seat that his father, Connie Mack III, held for two terms until he retired in 2000. And Mack picked a special venue for the announcement: Fox News.
Mack had previously announced in March that he was not running, saying that it would take away from his ability to spend time with his two small children and his wife (who is herself a member of the House from the opposite end of the country, Rep. Mary Bono Mack of California).
However, word was put out a month ago that he had changed his mind, and would get into the race — which has now been made official.
Mack’s entry into the race makes for a crowded primary, joining former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, and former Sen. George LeMieux, who was appointed to the state’s other Senate seat after previously being a top aide to then-Republican Gov. Charlie Crist.
