The Republican candidates are vying for the south, with the Alabama and Mississippi primaries Tuesday. So Stephen Colbert took a look at the candidates’ southern strategies during Monday night’s Colbert Report.
As a son of the South, Colbert said, “Any Republican who wants to be president has to woo us.” Thankfully, there are several “handsome gentleman callers,” Colbert said, as well as that nice old man who keeps promising everyone gold.
Mitt Romney is perhaps trying hardest to appeal to southerners, boasting of breakfasts of grits and biscuits and saying “ya’ll.” “Strange things are happening to me,” Romney said recently in the South.
“Yes, strange things are happening to him,” Colbert said. “Because becoming a southerner is a lot like puberty. Because your voice changes and your testicles secede from the north.”
