The Club For Growth, the right-wing economic group known for going after incumbent Republicans and establishment favorites in the primaries, has now set its sights on a big target: Six-term Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, with the Club endorsing state Treasurer Richard Mourdock’s challenge in the Republican primary. The primary will be held May 8.

The Club put out a press release Tuesday morning:

“After thirty-six years in Washington, it’s time to send Richard Lugar home,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “Richard Lugar has served honorably, but he’s been part of the problem in Washington. He’s voted for bigger government, more spending, and he even recently voted against a permanent ban on congressional pork. Richard Mourdock will vote to limit government, repeal ObamaCare, and will help bring back the jobs lost to the Obama’s economic policies. The Club for Growth PAC proudly endorses Richard Mourdock for United States Senate.”

Chocola is himself a former Congressman from Indiana who lost his seat in the 2006 Democratic wave, to none other than Democrat Joe Donnelly, who is in turn now the presumptive Democratic nominee for this election. Chocola has also written a companion article for National Review, laying out the Club’s endorsement of Mourdock, called “It’s time to Bring Lugar Home.”
