Cain Gets Emotional, Talks About His Wife Holding Bible ‘When I’m Sworn In’

November 18, 2011 11:22 a.m.

In an interview on Thursday with WMUR in New Hampshire, Herman Cain seemed to be holding back tears when discussing his wife holding the Bible at his inauguration. This might strike some people as odd, seeing as how he hasn’t been elected to the presidency, or any other public office — and indeed, not one single ballot has even been cast in the primaries yet.

The subject came up while Cain was discussing his wife’s potential role as First Lady. “I almost can’t say it,” Cain said, choking up a bit as he bowed his head. “Holding the Bible when I’m sworn in.”

One of his media interlocutors said, “Emotional, huh?” Cain nodded, as he re-gathered his composure.

Later that day, Cain held a rally in Nashua, New Hampshire, at which he declared, “We need a leader, not a reader.”

Video, care of CNN:

This is not the first time that Cain has gotten emotional while discussing the presidency that hasn’t happened.

This past Monday, when Cain was in Wisconsin — the same day he had his disastrous interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in which he struggled to answer a question about Libya — Cain also spoke in glowing terms of his future as president, followed by the establishment of a presidential library.

The paper reported:

He called his campaign “an interesting journey.”

While some who dismiss his election prospects have suggested his candidacy is a thinly veiled book tour, Cain sounded like a guy with grand expectations.

“I call it a journey, not just a campaign, because it doesn’t stop,” he said. “We’re in the primary. Then you run for president. You win the presidency, serve four years. (Then you) might have to serve eight at the insistence of the people. Then after that, launch a Cain library,” then a post-presidential speaking tour, he mused.
