Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) says congressional reaction to his weekend wedding shows real progress in the fight for gay rights. Instead of condemning his nuptials, Frank says, Republicans are just pretending they never happened.
“Mostly the Republicans have ignored it,” Frank told Current TV’s “Bill Press Show” Tuesday. “There have been no negative comments. I think a few years ago there would have been.”
Frank said “a couple of the Republicans” in Congress congratulated him “privately.”
The lack of public vitriol from Republican opponents to same-sex marriage following the first gay marriage ceremony for a sitting member of Congress shows the power of the anti-gay rights lobby is waning, Frank said.
“The climate is changing and the opponents are sort of realizing the country is moving beyond them,” he said.
